Player of the month: Javier Hernandez - Four goals, including a stunning back-header
Stat of the month: The draw against West Bromwich Albion was the only occasion all season that United dropped points in the league at Old Trafford. The Reds won 18 of 19 home league games.
October began with sewage leaking into the Reds' dressing room and a similarly unappetising display on the pitch at the Stadium of Light. Sir Alex's men still earned a point at Sunderland, though, before going 2-0 up at Old Trafford a week later when West Bromwich Albion came to visit. But then, a Patrice Evra own goal and an uncharacteristic Edwin van der Sar clanger gifted the Baggies a draw.
It was a case of doing just enough against Bursaspor when the Turkish side arrived at Old Trafford, Nani scoring the only goal of the game with a long-range screamer. Then, away at Stoke, Javier Hernandez netted twice (once with an impudent back-header) to hand United a first away win in the league, before the Mexican came off the bench to sink Wolves with an injury-time winner in the Carling Cup.
A 2-0 home win against Tottenham completed the month, although controversy reigned after Nani's blatant handball went unpunished by referee Mark Clattenburg.
